Sometimes a song gets stuck in your head,  right?
I’ve been unable to get a particular song, “Danny Nedelko” by IDLES, out of my brain this week. Written during a wave of anti-immigrant hatred in England, the song celebrates the expansion of human experience that happens when we refuse the trap of fearing people who appear to be different.
I think that’s something that was missing from my elementary school lessons about inclusivity and kindness: that they aren’t just something we should do for other people. In reality, these are qualities/approaches to life that benefit the person offering them, not just the one receiving them. Inclusion isn’t something we practice simply to be nice. Hopefully, we also practice inclusion because it invites everyone involved to a bigger experience of who we all get to be.
Now, to be very real about it, I want to acknowledge that opening our world to include more people and experiences can feel challenging. Maybe it’s hard to push yourself out of your comfort zone; maybe your energetic resources feel tapped to the extent that it’s hard to imagine bringing something new into your life.  But this in itself should stand out as a red flag: if we’re too tired to ever step out of our comfort zone or experience something new…maybe that’s a sign that some things need to change?
I’m curious when the last time was that you felt inspired by something, or found yourself drifting toward a new perspective because you were able to see a situation from a different angle. I’m curious when the last time was that you were delighted by something unexpected. I’m curious when the last time was that you recognized a habit that wasn’t working for you, and dropped it for something healthier. To me, these are all beautiful indicators of a healthy nervous system and a decent level of neuroplasticity–that is, the ability to let your brain grow and change. And these are all practices of opening ourselves up to include the more that life always offers, if we let it.
I hope this summer allows you the opportunity to seek out fresh experience. And I hope that experience feeds you, and leaves you feeling energized and excited about life. We look forward to seeing you soon!

As I think about this month’s theme, “Extend,” I’ll admit the first phrase that comes to my mind is one that I’ve heard from a fair number of people in the past year: “I feel overextended. ” Navigating so much change and challenge can certainly leave you feeling worn out, your resources tapped.
But in thinking about these words, I realize that the ability to 0verextend also implies the existence of…a healthy amount of extension. Which is probably one of the greatest delights of being alive.
Spring is demonstrating this delight all around us: plants, having gone dormant and built up their energy over the winter,  are now reaching for light and air, growing toward what nourishes them, and transforming in response to that nourishment.  It’s an elegant process that requires a careful balance of energy preserved and energy expended, in order to grow optimally.
As human beings, I worry that we feel we should always be growing and extending,  without allowing for the dormant periods that allow us to extend ourselves at a healthy rate. It’s a practice of wisdom,  to know when to slow down in order to enable future growth.
But the good news is, this is a practice we can undertake fairly easily. By asking each day,  “what do I have energy for today? In what ways do I need to rest in order to preserve resources–and in which directions can I extend myself in order to grow?”
Here at The Remedy,  we are thrilled to be able to support our community in both ways, by providing experiences that both replenish your energy, and inspire you to use that energy in positive ways.  We wish you a happy,  healthy spring, with enough rest to keep you grounded, and enough growth to keep you excited about your life.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

“Hope is the thing with feathers-
that perches in the soul-
And sings the tune without the words-
And never stops at all”
-Emily Dickenson
These well-known and beloved words from Emily Dickenson are some of my favorite when it comes to the topic of hope. Far from being pathologically sunny, Dickenson acknowledges that hope is necessarily a mysterious and slippery feeling. Singing the tune without the words: a perfect description of the fact that we are often most connected to hope in times when we have no idea what the hell is going on.
The 16-month year of 2020 feels a lot like that, doesn’t it? Like we’ve been locked in the house all year, peeking out of the curtains each day to determine whether the world is safe to step into. But now spring is here, and the pandemic, at least for now, is calming, and a tenuous hopefulness seems to be emerging, a step at a time.
And it’s okay to have doubts. And okay to feel like your heart is still strapped into a roller coaster. And okay to feel too tired to accomplish things some days. In fact, I think those are all signs that we are treating our hopes like a real thing, rather than just a daydream. Real things take work. Rest is a required part of hoping.
As we navigate this new season, I am interested in the things that keep us hoping. I can tell you that the good fortune of being at The Remedy keeps me in tune with it–seeing the kindness, strength and resilience of both my co-workers and our guests leaves me breathing better. I’m so grateful for it. We hope the magic of this place leaves you breathing better, too, and invites within you the courage to look at the future and imagine what might be possible, when you’ve done what you need to take care of yourself.
We’re here and looking forward to it with you!
With love,
Erin H/The Remedy

I’m writing this while looking out my back window, and I can see that there are blossoms on the apricot tree in the back yard. Though the signs of spring have been whispering themselves to us for a couple of weeks now, seeing these flowers causes me to realize that it has really happened: even after such a difficult year, the cycle of emerging life begins yet again.
The theme of this month, “Prosper,” is one that seems a bit challenging to grapple with after a year of so much loss and sudden change. But it’s an excellent challenge in some ways: loss and change can push us toward the heart of what really matters.  In the process of preserving what matters most, however, we must find patience for ourselves and each other.
In her book  of essays titled “Anything We Love Can Be Saved,” Alice Walker talks about the tendency to berate ourselves for the insufficiency of our individual actions.  In a world that seems to be tearing itself apart, how could we possibly hope to create peace, prosperity and well-being? Walker’s beautiful words encourage us to show up for our part in things:
“…For we can do nothing substantial toward changing our course on the planet, a destructive one, without rousing ourselves, individual by individual, and bringing our small, imperfect stones to the pile.”
I am reminded when I read this of the stones I lifted from the soil, clearing space for the roots of the apricot tree that now blooms. For years it had not grown fruit, and we wondered whether it was worth keeping. But I couldn’t stand the idea of killing that tree. We decided instead to nourish her as often as we could, even if our skills were inexpert and not always consistent. It looks now like that effort mattered, and we have a chance to see what will come of it.
This is what prosperity grows from: patience and persistence. A willingness to put effort into a process of growing, even if it might be months before we can see the fruits of that effort. Prosperity does not mean a doubtless certainty that everything will be fine–we’ve seen too much for that. But it might mean giving our hearts to the preservation of things that matter, keeping those wheels turning even if the turning is slow and the movement forward undetectable at times.
That we are all still here and capable of growing is a gift. This month we encourage you to consider what is most important in your life, and to bring your “small, imperfect stones to the pile” as often as you can. That’s where prosperity grows from: in loving something enough to keep feeding it. None of us know what the fruition will look like right now, and the finish line may be very far away. That’s okay. Keep going. Keep going. A new season is here to cheer you on.

February Focus: The Wonder of it All
During times of great change and upheaval, it can be easy to focus on what we’ve lost–whether it’s a personal loss, perhaps related to a job or a relationship; or a more universal loss, such as the daily interactions we all shared before the arrival of the current pandemic.
It is understandable and in fact highly advisable to grieve those losses. Pretending nothing has changed is unlikely to do much good! And yet, in addition to the grieving, it is also important to give space to a sense of wonder, at all that is developing anew in this time of change, and all the resilience and strength we may have uncovered within ourselves.
It may seem as though the experience of wonder and amazement is something that just happens to you. After all, so much of this experience is defined by a healthy sense of letting go of control, and just getting bowled over by something miraculous or beautiful–a desert sunset, perhaps, or the sudden laughter of your child. And while that feeling of being joyfully taken by surprise feels uncontrollable, it doesn’t always have to happen completely by accident.
Meditation teacher Sally Kempton once said, “enlightenment is an accident, and meditation makes us accident-prone.”  While I’ve never been exactly sure what “enlightenment” really is, I do know that the experience of wonder is adjacent to it–it connects us to something bigger than ourselves, to an experience of gratitude just for being alive. And when we deliberately take the time to focus on something without distraction, we open ourselves up to wonder.  Doing things that help to improve focus–whether meditating, dancing, or keeping a gratitude journal–help to build the mental muscle that makes the experience of wonder more likely to hit us.
We wish you all a happy, healthy, wonder-ful February!

In years past, I have always looked forward to the energy of a new year. The possibilities! The plans! The goals, actions and outcomes!
I’m gonna be straight with you: it feels different this year.
I imagine most of us are finding a little bit of exhaustion or numbness where our new year excitement might have been.  After nearly a year of what feels like constant national crisis, this is to be expected. This IS normal. Brain fog, loss of motivation and elective function, difficulty focusing…all of these are natural responses to prolonged stress.
I’ll tell you what I’m not going to say to you. I am not going to tell you to try to take on a challenging new program of self-improvement, where you suddenly create a wildly different life than the one you are currently living. Because look: you are *currently living.* Good job on that.
What I will invite you to is the consideration of choosing ONE thing, right now, today, that might allow you to feel good, and grounded, and safe.
Maybe that’s a warm bath, a game like tridewa, a phone call with a friend, a yoga class, or a full-on interpretive dance freakout to Philip Glass’s weirdest compositions (I’m just saying: IT HELPS!) Maybe it’s saying no to a request that you know you can’t manage without going over your energetic budget. Maybe it’s just giving yourself permission to sit down and stare out the window.
As anyone who has watched themselves move on from a traumatic (or merely highly stressful) situation knows, that moving-on process is rarely linear. You will have bad days again, I’m sorry to tell you. But you will also have good ones. And if you’re paying attention, you may discover the small things that make new joy possible.  We invite you to do those things as often as you can, without apology.
And we’re here to help. Come see us for a soak, a massage, a yoga class, and our most grateful smiles. We appreciate you! Hang in there! We’re all moving on together.
